Ph.D., Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 1958

Professor Lick joined UCSB's College of Engineering in 1979. He obtained both his M.A.E. (1957) and Ph.D. (1958) degrees in Aeronautical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to coming to UCSB, he taught at Harvard University and Case Western Reserve University. At present, his specific research interests are in water pollution, where he is doing theoretical and experimental work on (a) currents and wave action, (b) the transport of sediments, and (c) the transport and transformation of contaminants in aquatic systems. His emphasis here is on near-shore waters with applications to the Great Lakes and Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts. He also is working on computational fluid mechanics in general, with applications to chemical vapor deposition reactors and the aerodynamics of the shuttle. In addition to authoring numerous journal articles and a book entitled Difference Equations from Differential Equations, Professor Lick is a consultant to the federal and state governments as well as private industry. Professor Lick receives research funding from different programs under the Environmental Protection Agency, including Exploratory Research, Duluth National Laboratory, and the Great Lakes National Program Office.
