Philosophy

Viable initiatives in the field of Materials and Structures begin at the system level and incorporate iterative linkages between the system, the components and the basic engineering. At the system level, Materials and Structures research strives to attain superior combinations of higher performance, lower weight and affordability. To achieve such combinations, multi-functionality has become essential: Namely, to reduce weight, a single component must be designed to serve several functions simultaneously.

Systems challenges inevitably originate with new requirements emerging within engineering sectors of Industry. Moreover, the reduced emphasis on research in Industry has resulted in greater demand for University programs to broaden into technology areas and to identify protocols for their effective transition. CeMMaS provides a forum for innovation in diverse aspects of technology development and transition.
